Good afternoon.

Excuse me, but I need some advice.

I have had a cow for 12 years, the last 4 years it has been mating poorly. The previous brood was after the 2 ovulation scheme (estrophan and surfacon). This year, we did not achieve the result and did not inseminate. We covered her with an AI, mated with the bull 4 times, to no avail. A rectal veterinarian came, said “ovarian cyst”, suppressed the cyst, injected a vitamin and antibiotic, calmed her down, but fertilization did not occur after mating. Maybe our cow needs another treatment? Thank you

We apologize for the delay in responding - we have been customizing the platform to make it even more efficient and convenient for you in the future. Regarding your cow, you have to decide for yourself what is most important to you: do you want to get milk and profit from it or do you plan to keep it as a pet? The cow is already 12 years old - few people keep it that long, you need a young cow or a heifer. If the cow is already like a family member to you and you can't say goodbye to it, then it's important not to delay and go to the veterinarian to undergo an ultrasound and make the right diagnosis for treatment. But it will be just to maintain the animal's health, and most likely, there will be no cure. The decision in this situation is yours

Obesity in cows is a serious risk factor for reproduction, as it disrupts hormonal balance and can lead to reduced sexual activity and fertilization problems. Excessive fat deposition also complicates calving and increases the risk of postpartum complications.

Proper post-weaning housing conditions are key to calves' health and growth. A clean, dry room with adequate ventilation and quality feed helps to reduce stress, strengthen immunity and ensure rapid development of young animals.

Dysfunctions of the reproductive system in cows require special attention, as they directly affect herd productivity and economic performance. Timely diagnosis and correction of such problems help prevent losses and ensure stable reproduction.

We have an important question. Answer) - Is there a need to change the feeding regime for cattle in the heat?

Definitely yes. Fresh, clean, and cool water should be available at all times, and it should be topped up more often in the heat of the day. Healthy calves can drink up to 12 liters of water per day, while sick calves can drink up to 20 liters. Add electrolytes (sodium, potassium, sweetener) to prevent dehydration. Replace feed more often, increase the number of milk feedings, and you can reduce fat in milk replacers without reducing protein. If calves are consuming less feed before weaning, postpone weaning until appetite is restored.

And what to do if you suspect that the calf has already overheated, how to help?

Signs include rapid breathing, body temperature above 39°C, lethargy, and refusal to eat. Such a calf should be cooled quickly: moisten its back with water, if possible, blow it with a fan. In severe cases, you can spray it with isopropyl alcohol to cool it down faster. Give electrolytes with cool (32-35°C) water or administer them through an esophageal tube if the calf does not drink on its own. It is better to postpone medical procedures and vaccinations during a heat wave or do them in the morning.
